Greek police arrested a 60-year-old man after he stabbed two American tourists of Greek origin on Tuesday near the Acropolis archaeological site in Athens, according to Reuters news agency.

A police official said that the victims, a man and a woman aged 73 and 78 respectively, received necessary medical care, confirming that their injuries were not life-threatening.

The official added that the suspect had previously undergone hospital treatment for mental health issues, has a criminal record, and had been arrested before for possession of a knife.

This rare incident comes as Greece experiences its first heatwave of the summer, coinciding with the peak tourist season which attracts large numbers of visitors to the country.
