The spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, expressed the organization's deep concern over the new threats issued by the Houthi terrorist militia against Saudi Arabia and freedom of navigation in vital corridors of the Red Sea, warning of the risk of wider regional escalation.

Dujarric affirmed that the UN is deeply concerned about the return of hostilities and renewed escalation in large parts of the region, stressing that immediate de-escalation has become an urgent necessity that cannot be delayed.

He said: "All parties must respect their obligations under international humanitarian law," reiterating the UN's call to urge all parties to resolve their differences through dialogue and diplomacy.

The UN spokesperson warned that any disruption to navigation in the Red Sea would directly affect the flow of UN shipments, particularly humanitarian supplies and peacekeeping operation necessities, as well as its broader repercussions on global trade and energy trade.

Dujarric pointed out that these developments come at a time when the world is witnessing the impact of the near-complete closure of the Strait of Hormuz and its severe international economic repercussions.
