(CNN)-- The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced, in a post on platform X (formerly Twitter), the resumption of the naval blockade imposed by the US military on ships heading to and from Iranian ports, effective at 4:00 PM Eastern Time.
The resumption of the blockade comes one day after US President Donald Trump said it would be reinstated, and that the United States would act as a "guardian" of the Strait of Hormuz.
CENTCOM reiterated the specified time in a post on X minutes before the decision took effect, noting that the United States is launching more strikes against Iranian capabilities in the vicinity of the strait.
The Central Command's post stated: "These strikes are taking place as US forces prepare to resume the naval blockade imposed on Iranian ports and coastal areas."
On Monday, Trump said the United States would impose fees on commercial shipping companies equal to 20% of their cargo value, as compensation for the US for "providing safety and security" in the strait, but he backtracked on that stance on Tuesday, indicating that Arab Gulf states would conclude "trade and investment agreements... with the United States."
It is noteworthy that the United States had previously imposed a blockade on Iranian ports in the early phase of the war that lasted about two months, specifically between April and June; blockade enforcement operations extended from the Middle East region to the Indian Ocean thousands of miles away.
