After 50 Matches, Duke Bids Farewell to Australia
Mitchell Duke, striker for the Australian national football team, has announced his retirement from international football, ending a career that spanned more than a decade, during which he earned 50 international caps. The 35-year-old represented Australia at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, scoring a header against Tunisia to secure his country's first win in the tournament in 12 years. Duke also played a key role in Australia's journey to qualify for the 2026 World Cup by scoring the winning goal against Saudi Arabia in the qualifiers last year. However, he was not called up to the final squad for the ongoing tournament in North America. The player said in a statement on Saturday: "After much thought, the time has come for me to officially announce my retirement from international football. As a child growing up in Australia, I dreamed of wearing the green and gold shirt even once, so representing my country 50 times is a dream come true 50 times over, and an honor I never took for granted." He added: "Although I will keep all the memories, scoring a goal for Australia at the 2022 World Cup remains the highlight of my career. Wearing the shirt of my country and representing it has been the greatest honor of my life."
