After Loss to Spain, Deschamps Criticizes Match Referee
Didier Deschamps, the manager of the French national team, criticized the refereeing after being eliminated from the World Cup with a 2-0 loss to Spain in the semifinals on Tuesday evening.
In televised statements, Deschamps said: "Of course our players are disappointed, but we admit that we were inferior technically and made mistakes."
The French coach asked: "But was the referee up to the level of managing a World Cup semifinal... I will not answer this question after a number of adverse decisions."
He added: "But the main reason for the loss is that we were below the required level and made technical errors, and passes that could have led to opportunities."
The coach of the French team pointed out that "losing in the advanced stages of major tournaments is painful, and now we must focus on the bronze medal match. I do not want to diminish what we have achieved, but in this match, Spain was better and gave a standout performance."
He continued: "I am not thinking about myself. We prepared ourselves for the match, and our goal was to give our utmost effort to reach the final, but we were not fortunate, and we feel great disappointment."
Deschamps concluded his remarks by saying: "We lacked technical precision and energy. The Spanish team is very adept at frustrating attacks with anticipation, passing, and possession. We wished we could have created more offensive problems for them."
