Khaled Al-Ghamdi, president of Al-Ahli club, is set to officially run for the presidency of the Saudi Football Federation on Sunday, during the elections scheduled for next August 30, according to sources who spoke to Al-Riyadiah. The elections follow Yasser Al-Mashal's resignation from the presidency of the Saudi Federation, which he announced via his account on platform X after the Saudi national team's exit from the 2026 World Cup. According to the same sources, Al-Ghamdi will announce on Sunday all details regarding his candidacy, including his electoral list that includes former players and administrators who have previously worked in Saudi football. Al-Ghamdi's step to enter the race for the presidency of the Football Federation, according to the same sources, comes amid his non-continuation as president of Al-Ahli with the trend toward canceling board elections for non-profit institutions in the clubs of Al-Nassr, Al-Ahli, and Al-Ittihad in the coming period and the intention to put the clubs owned by the Public Investment Fund up for sale. Al-Ghamdi assumed the presidency of the non-profit Al-Ahli Club Foundation three consecutive times starting from July 2024, and his tenure was marked by many achievements, most notably the first team's winning of the AFC Champions League Elite title twice consecutively. If Al-Ghamdi officially announces his candidacy, he will enter into competition with Badr Al-Razaizah, former chairman of the board of Al-Qadsiah club, who officially announced his candidacy for the position of chairman of the board of the Football Federation, in addition to other names preparing to run in the elections according to Al-Riyadiah sources, including Dr. Yahya Rajab Al-Sharif, Muayyad Al-Shahri, Hatem Khaimi, Dawoud Al-Muqrin, and Ahmed Al-Wadaei. The candidacy period for the presidency of the Football Federation continues until next August 1 according to the timeline approved by the Election Committee of the Board of the Saudi Football Federation. The lists of candidates will be examined from August 2 to 7, and the Saudi Sports Arbitration Center will receive appeals and grievances on the lists during the period from August 9 to 13, with rulings issued during the period from August 15 to 23, and results announced on August 24. The timeline set August 25 as the final date for candidate withdrawals, before announcing the final lists on August 26, and election campaigns start the following day and continue until August 29. The elections will be held during the extraordinary general assembly meeting on August 30, 2026.
