Portuguese Jorge Jesus, former head coach of Al-Nassr, has decided to sacrifice two-thirds of his salary with the Saudi club in order to lead his country's national team in the upcoming period.

The Portuguese Football Federation announced the departure of Spanish coach Roberto Martínez from his position as head coach of the senior national team after exiting the 2026 World Cup in the round of 16 against Spain.

The Portuguese newspaper A Bola reported that Jorge Jesus will be the new head coach of the 'Brazil of Europe' on a four-year contract that will expire after the 2030 World Cup, which Portugal will co-host with Spain and Morocco.

The newspaper clarified that the Portuguese federation is currently finalizing all details, hoping to officially announce Jesus's appointment before next Sunday.

Jesus agreed to coach Portugal, rejecting some other offers, even though he will receive about a third of the salary he earned at Al-Nassr: less than €4 million, compared to his €12 million salary in the Saudi league.

According to the same newspaper, Jesus will bring his coaching staff, consisting of João de Deus and Fábio Jesus as assistant coaches, Márcio Sampaio as fitness coach, and Rodrigo Araújo and Gil Henriques as performance analysts.

In addition, it is expected that Ricardo Carvalho will continue as assistant coach and Ricardo as goalkeeping coach, though this is not yet confirmed.

However, Jorge Jesus wants to add a new member to the coaching staff in the coming period: Pepe, the Real Madrid legend, who officially retired from football after Euro 2024.

Pepe's name had been linked with a return to Real Madrid as part of the new coaching staff under Portuguese manager José Mourinho, but he refused that offer.

Jesus hopes that Pepe will agree to join him with the Portuguese national team, to benefit from his extensive international experience, which includes 141 caps for the 'Brazil of Europe,' something that will help him assert control over the dressing room.
