The crisis between Julian Alvarez and Atletico Madrid has escalated after the Argentine player considered the statements made by club CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin just 48 hours before the World Cup final as a 'great lack of respect' and 'malicious' behavior, with the situation between the two sides now 'irreparable'.

Journalist Leo Paradizo of ESPN Argentina reported, citing sources close to the player, his family, or his agent Fernando Hidalgo, that Alvarez was unhappy with the timing the club chose to discuss his future, viewing Gil Marin's fiery remarks just days before his participation in the 2026 World Cup final with Argentina against Spain as a deliberate provocation.

ESPN confirmed that the relationship between the player and Atletico Madrid has become more complicated than before, and that Alvarez is seriously considering not attending training with the club when the season resumes, in protest of what he considers a 'lack of respect' from the team's management.

Paradizo insisted that those close to the player believe Atletico Madrid deliberately tried to destabilize him at the most important moment of his career, referring to the World Cup final he is playing on Sunday against Spain.

Atletico Responds

However, the club's version of events was completely different. Atletico Madrid confirmed that the player himself raised the issue of his future during the World Cup, while his national team was still competing. In fact, he did so on the same day Lionel Messi set a new record with the Argentina national team, overshadowing what should have been a landmark moment for the star.

The club explained that the interview conducted this week with Gil Marin was timed specifically because, among the topics discussed, was the club's pride in the nine Argentine and Spanish players who reached the World Cup final, and the conversation was not limited to Alvarez's future alone.

Gil Marin stated decisively: 'We do not want to sell him. We will not accept an offer of 100 million euros, or 150 million, or 200 million. I have no doubt that Atletico Madrid is the best place for Julian in the world... And he will not play for Barcelona next season.'

A Message for the Agent

In what appears to be a message directed at the player's agent Fernando Hidalgo, the Atletico Madrid CEO stated that Julian 'received bad advice,' a clear indication that the club holds the agent responsible for escalating the crisis.
