The new coach of Italian club AC Milan, Portuguese Ruben Amorim, presented the signing of his compatriot, striker Goncalo Ramos, formerly of Paris Saint-Germain, on Wednesday as a "message" embodying the new identity the club seeks to build. Amorim said during his first press conference as coach of the Lombardy club: "Goncalo Ramos is more than just a player, he is a message confirming that we want players who believe in the team." Related news The Portuguese coach added: "When people watch him, they talk about his talent, but I see a player who delivers the same performance whether he plays for five minutes or starts. When he plays, he gives everything for the team, and since we want to play an attacking style with high pressing and imposing control, it is important to have a striker with this mentality." Milan spent €74 million ($84.5 million) to sign Ramos, 25, who failed to establish himself as a regular starter for star-studded PSG, and signed a contract with the Italian club until June 2031. Ramos's transfer follows a disappointing season for Milan, which finished fifth in Serie A, after losing the fourth-place Champions League qualifying spot following a loss in the final matchday, a result that cost coach Massimiliano Allegri his job. Amorim said: "I don't want to talk about the past because I have great respect for Allegri, but I can describe the way I want my team to play: control opponents, high pressing, and exciting our fans." Aware of the suffering of Milan fans in recent seasons, Amorim promised to do "everything possible" to achieve the goal of winning the "second star," referring to the club's 20th Serie A title. The Portuguese coach hopes to achieve that with Croatian Luka Modric in his squad, although the 40-year-old player has not yet decided whether to continue his career with Milan, which began last summer. Amorim said: "I have already spoken with him twice, and he will be important for us to have more possession of the ball. I'm not saying he will play every match, but we strongly want him with us." Regarding his previous experience with English Manchester United between November 2024 and last January, the 41-year-old Amorim admitted that there were "many things" he could have done better. He noted, "I learned a lot, and now I am a better coach." jer/da'a
