Amorim Views Ramos Deal as Message About New Milan
The new coach of Italian club AC Milan, Portuguese Ruben Amorim, on Wednesday considered the signing of his compatriot, striker Gonçalo Ramos, formerly of French club Paris Saint-Germain, as a 'message' embodying the new identity of the club he aims to build.
Amorim said during his first press conference as coach of the Lombardy club: 'Gonçalo Ramos is more than just a player; he is a message confirming that we want players who believe in the team.'
The Portuguese coach added: 'When people watch him, they talk about his talent, but I see a player who delivers the same performance whether he plays five minutes or starts. When he plays, he gives his all for the team, and since we want to play with an attacking style, high pressing, and imposing control, it is important to have a striker with this mentality.'
Milan spent €74 million ($84.5 million) to sign Ramos, 25, who had failed to establish himself as a regular starter with star-studded PSG, and signed a contract with the Italian club until June 2031.
Ramos's transfer follows a disappointing season for Milan, which finished fifth in Serie A, having lost the fourth-place qualifying spot for the Champions League after a final-day defeat, a result that cost coach Massimiliano Allegri his job.
Amorim said: 'I don't want to talk about the past because I have great respect for Allegri, but I can describe the way I want my team to play: control of opponents, high pressing, and exciting our fans.'
Aware of the suffering of Milan fans in recent seasons, Amorim promised to do 'everything possible' to achieve the goal of winning the 'second star,' referring to winning the 20th league title in the club's history.
The Portuguese coach hopes to achieve this with Croatian Luka Modrić in his squad, although the 40-year-old has yet to make a decision on continuing his career and his experience with Milan that began last summer.
Amorim said: 'I have already spoken with him twice, and he will be important for us to have greater ball possession. I'm not saying he will play every match, but we very much want him with us.'
Regarding his previous experience with English Manchester United between November 2024 and last January, Amorim, 41, acknowledged that there were 'many things' he could have done better.
He noted: 'I learned a lot, and I am now a better coach.'
