Messi vs the English System

Lionel Messi, Argentina's captain, is preparing to play his first international match against England, despite having played over 200 games in the 'Albiceleste' shirt.

Stopping Messi represents one of England's biggest challenges, given his freedom to move between the centre and the right wing, and his ability to exploit spaces and make a difference in decisive moments, according to an analysis by the Buenos Aires Times.

Micha Richards, former England defender and BBC analyst, said: 'It's impossible to man-mark Messi because he doesn't drop back much and always finds spaces that shouldn't exist. He has exceptional spatial awareness and appears at the right moment.'

Rice vs Enzo Fernandez

The midfield may see a direct clash between Declan Rice and Enzo Fernandez, who both moved in 2023 to Arsenal and Chelsea respectively for similar fees exceeding 100 million euros.

Fernandez is known for his playmaking and key passes, while Rice relies on his physical strength and his great ability to win the ball back and cover spaces.

England is awaiting Rice's full fitness after he was substituted at halftime in the quarterfinal match against Norway due to a health issue.

Kane and Alvarez.. the defense in a tough test

Harry Kane aims to exploit the gaps that have appeared in Argentina's defense during the knockout rounds, after the team conceded five goals in three matches against Cape Verde, Egypt, and Switzerland.

England's captain knows several Argentine defenders well, notably Cristian Romero, his former teammate at Tottenham, in addition to Lisandro Martínez and Emiliano Martínez.

On the other hand, Julián Álvarez will try to breach England's defense, expected to be led by John Stones and Marc Guéhi, in a clash that could be decisive in setting the match tempo.

The competition will not be limited to the pitch, as the stands of the Mercedes-Benz Stadium are expected to witness a fan clash between supporters of both teams.

Argentina has received the biggest fan support in the tournament, with their fans accustomed to organizing massive gatherings before matches, waving giant flags and chanting in a festive atmosphere.

In contrast, English fans are known for their terrace songs that accompany their team in major tournaments, hoping their voices will be loudest at the final whistle, while Argentines dream of singing their unofficial anthem in celebration of reaching the final and moving closer to their fourth star.
