The Argentine Football Association said on Wednesday that the news about the US judiciary summoning its president Claudio Tapia or its treasurer Pablo Toviggino to testify is "completely untrue."

However, the federation acknowledged that the US judiciary summoned a third party to appear before a grand jury, and possibly to provide evidence regarding several individuals, including officials from the organization.

Local media had reported that FBI agents detained Tapia and Toviggino at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York on Monday morning before they boarded a charter flight carrying the Argentine national team after the World Cup final, and requested Tapia's devices.

The Argentine news platform Infobae reported that US authorities are investigating commercial contracts related to the Argentine Football Association worth over $300 million, under broader scrutiny of Argentine football finances following raids in December last year as part of a money laundering investigation.

An eyewitness at the airport said that federal agents questioned both Tapia and Toviggino for about 30 minutes on a bus parked on the airport tarmac as the Argentine delegation was preparing to board the plane.

In response to a request for comment, the Port Authority, a transportation agency for New York and New Jersey, referred Reuters to the FBI. The FBI declined to comment.

The federation did not name the third party summoned by the US judiciary, but emphasized that US authorities did not target Tapia or Toviggino. The federation said in a statement: "It is completely false to claim that Claudio Tapia or Pablo Toviggino have been summoned to testify before the US judiciary. It is also false to claim that their mobile phones or any other electronic devices were confiscated. The document in question does not impose any personal action on the president or the treasurer, does not order their appearance, does not impose any procedural obligation on them, and does not record any confiscation or seizure of property belonging to them."
