"Football is Life" — 'Ted Lasso' Actor Plays First Professional Match
Cristo Fernández, the actor known for playing a professional soccer player in the series 'Ted Lasso,' had his first real experience on the field this week.
Fernández, who portrayed the character Dani Rojas in the popular series, made his debut in the USL Championship with El Paso Locomotive FC in their League Cup match against New Mexico United on Saturday evening. He entered as a substitute in the 79th minute and received a yellow card during the 2-0 loss.
The 35-year-old actor was an outstanding young player, having competed with Club Tecos in the Mexican league, before injuries ended his career and pushed him toward acting.
Earlier this year, he had a tryout with Chicago Fire's reserve team, which led to another tryout with El Paso and eventually signing a contract.
"Football is life!" was the famous phrase of his character in 'Ted Lasso,' and he repeated his most famous words in an interview with ESPN in May.
He said at the time: 'Football has given me the best and the saddest moments. I think that's why football is life to me.'
