American billionaire Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, has held talks about joining a consortium led by British-Indian investor Amit Bhatia, who is interested in buying a minority stake in Liverpool, the 20-time English Premier League champions, according to reports published on Wednesday.

Bezos, one of the richest men in the world, could become part of the group led by Bhatia, son-in-law of billionaire steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal.

Sky News reported that Bezos is interested in the deal, but noted that he has not yet made a decision to proceed with the potential plan.

Forbes magazine estimates the wealth of the 62-year-old American at around £192 billion ($257 billion).

Fenway Sports Group, the owner of Liverpool, confirmed on Tuesday that the consortium led by Bhatia has contacted them to discuss buying a minority stake in the six-time European champion English club.

Bezos has previously reportedly studied making bids for the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders of the NFL, but decided not to proceed with either deal.

Bhatia's interest in Liverpool came on the same day he stepped down from the board of Queens Park Rangers.

The 46-year-old Bhatia ended an 18-year association with the team playing in the Championship, England's second tier, by transferring his stake to majority owner Ruben Gnanalingam.

In 2023, Fenway Sports Group sold a minority stake in Liverpool to investment firm Dynasty, and any deal with Bhatia, if completed, is expected to follow the same approach.

According to the Financial Times, any deal with the consortium led by Bhatia would value Liverpool at more than $6 billion.

Fenway Sports Group, which also owns the Boston Red Sox baseball team, bought Liverpool in 2010 for £300 million.
