Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez will be present on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey to support his country's team in the 2026 World Cup final, despite his criticisms of the policies of US President Donald Trump, who will be beside him, according to his office announced on Friday to AFP.

His office said: 'The prime minister will attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, scheduled for Sunday in the United States. Afterwards, he will travel to Algeria,' where he is making a pre-planned official visit.

On Thursday, Trump's attendance at the final, which pits Spain against Argentina, was confirmed by White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt.

Sánchez will meet again with Trump, with whom relations are known to be tense, but not with Argentine President Javier Milei, who clarified on Thursday that he will watch the final on television.

King Felipe VI of Spain and his family are also expected to attend.

Relations between Sánchez and Trump soured early this year after the Spanish prime minister opposed the war launched by the United States and Israel on Iran, positioning himself at the forefront of Western voices rejecting the combat operations that inflamed the Middle East.

Last week, during a NATO summit in Turkey, the US president again sharply criticized the socialist leader's policies, stating that the United States would halt 'any trade exchange' with Spain, which he considered a 'lost cause'.

Trump primarily faults Spain for not contributing enough to NATO defense spending and for preventing the United States from using military bases in the Andalusia region to conduct airstrikes against Iran.

In an attempt to ease tensions, Sánchez in Ankara, hours after these harsh public criticisms, praised the 'very positive' relations with the United States, explaining that he spoke with the White House man 'about football and the World Cup' and 'golf' during an informal 'friendly' meeting.

After the final between Spain and Argentina (Sunday at 19:00 GMT), Sánchez will travel to Algeria for his first visit there in four years.

This visit is expected to help complete the process of improving relations between Algeria and Madrid after years of tension.
