Argentina President: 'Luck' prevents me from attending the final... and I won't take off the jacket
Argentine President Javier Milei has confirmed that he will not travel to the U.S. to attend the World Cup final between Argentina and Spain, opting instead to watch the game from the presidential residence due to strict superstitious rituals. Notably, he insists on wearing a specific winter jacket he believes brings the team good luck.
Argentine President Javier Milei confirmed that he will not be in America tomorrow to attend the World Cup final between his country and Spain, during a conversation with the radio station 'El Observador'.
The president indicated that he will watch the final from the presidential residence due to the rituals and superstitions he strictly follows when watching his national team's matches.
Javier, known for his 'extreme pessimism' regarding breaking habits that bring good luck, announced that he will watch the match on television from his residence.
He stated: 'I will not attend the final, under any circumstances; I will continue watching the matches from Olivos (the presidential residence), as I have done since day one.'
When asked by a journalist if this was due to superstition, he replied 'Yes,' explaining that he watches the matches in the cinema room at Olivos accompanied by his sister Karina, the Secretary-General of the Presidency.
The Argentine president shared another peculiar detail about his World Cup rituals, confirming that he would watch the match wearing a thick winter jacket featuring the logo of the national oil company (YPF)—the same jacket he wore during Argentina's 3-1 quarter-final victory over Switzerland.
Milei added: 'Since it was cold and I didn't turn on the heating, I wore the oil company jacket, and thanks to it, I felt very warm on the day of the match against Switzerland. However, when I took it off, we conceded a goal, so I put it back on immediately and haven't taken it off since.'
In contrast, Spanish support will be present at the highest level, as the Spanish Royal Household announced that King Felipe VI will attend the final match on Sunday in East Rutherford, New Jersey, following Spain's 2-0 semi-final victory over France. The King will be accompanied by Queen Letizia and their daughters, Princess Leonor and Princess Sofia.
