Argentina captain Lionel Messi confirmed that the upcoming clash with Spain star Lamine Yamal in the 2026 World Cup final carries exceptional significance, following the famous photo taken of them together nearly 19 years ago.
Speaking at the World Cup final press conference, held yesterday as part of the 'Fanatics Fest' event in New York City, Messi said: 'The photo with Lamine when he was a child is unbelievable. That's life; we took a picture together back then, and today we find ourselves face to face in the World Cup final.'
The Argentina captain praised Yamal's talent, stating that he follows his career closely because he plays for Barcelona, a club he feels emotionally attached to, and wishes him success in his sporting career.
He added that at 19, Yamal has become one of the most prominent footballers in the world, with a long future ahead, noting that he has an opportunity to achieve a historic feat with the Spanish national team, but Argentina will do their utmost to prevent that in the final match.
Messi explained that Yamal is currently one of the best players in the world, wishing him success in his career, and pointing out that his success will reflect positively on Barcelona.
Argentina and Spain are set to meet this evening, Sunday, at the New York New Jersey stadium in the 2026 World Cup final, with Argentina seeking their fourth world title, while Spain aims to win the title for the second time in their history.
