Spanish club Atletico Madrid announced on Saturday the signing of Danish midfielder Morten Hjulmand from Sporting Lisbon on a five-year contract. Global media outlets revealed the value of the deal between the two parties, estimated at $46 million. The 27-year-old Danish midfielder played 141 matches, scoring 10 goals and providing 12 assists for Sporting since joining the Portuguese club from Italian side Lecce in 2023. Hjulmand led the team to two consecutive Portuguese league titles in the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 seasons, as well as the Portuguese Cup. The Danish player has earned 27 international caps for his country since his debut in 2023. The defensive midfielder is known for his ability to win the ball, physical strength, and game reading. Hjulmand's arrival follows Atletico's signing of Spanish left-back Alex Grimaldo from Bayer Leverkusen during the current summer transfer window.
