Authorities in South Africa announced on Saturday that they have opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Jayden Adams, a player for the South African national team and Mamelodi Sundowns, who died at the age of 25 just days after his participation in the 2026 World Cup.

According to AFP news agency, police on Saturday morning found the body of a 25-year-old man inside a house in the Schotschekloof area of central Cape Town. A police spokesperson confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances of the death, without providing any additional details or revealing the cause.

For his part, South African Minister of Sports Gayton McKenzie mourned the late player, expressing shock at his death, and affirming that the country's football has lost one of its brightest young talents, without revealing the cause of death. Adams' passing came shortly after he represented the Bafana Bafana national team in the 2026 World Cup, where he started in all three of his country's group stage matches, before missing the match against Canada in the Round of 32. The player had experienced difficult personal circumstances during the tournament, after losing his grandmother before the group stage match against the Czech Republic. Despite this, he played in the match and delivered a performance that earned praise from the South African Football Association, which stated that Adams played with a fighting spirit despite the grief he was experiencing.
