British Politician Calls for Cancellation of Work Visas for Argentine Players
Niall Gardiner, former adviser to the late British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, has called for the withdrawal of British work visas from Argentine players in the English Premier League, after Argentine players raised a banner reading "The Malvinas are Argentine" following their World Cup semi-final victory over England.
Writing on platform X, Gardiner said: "The British work visa should be withdrawn from every Argentine player in the English Premier League who took part in this ugly anti-British display. There should be no leniency on this matter."
His post quickly garnered widespread attention and sparked debate among British and Argentine users on social media.
The controversy followed celebrations by Argentine players on the pitch, where many raised a white banner bearing the phrase "The Malvinas are Argentine," referencing Argentina's long-standing claim to sovereignty over the Falkland Islands.
Several members of the Argentine national team play in the English Premier League, including Emiliano Martínez (Aston Villa), Cristian Romero (Tottenham), Marcos Senesi (Tottenham), Lisandro Martínez (Manchester United), Alexis Mac Allister (Liverpool), and Enzo Fernández (Chelsea).
