Canada captain: We left Canadian football in the best place
The Canadian team bid farewell to the tournament after a 3-0 defeat to Morocco in the round of 16, and while there was disappointment and frustration, there was also a lot of pride.
Stephen Eustáquio, Canada captain, said in statements published on FIFA's website: "We worked hard to reach this stage and put in a good performance."
He added: "Of course, qualifying from the group stage was a great feeling. Then winning the knockout match against South Africa was a big achievement for the country. During halftime of the Morocco match, we felt we could win the game and reach the quarterfinals, but in the end, things were decided by small details. However, I am proud of this group, and I think we did a great job, and we now look forward to a new four-year cycle."
The Canadian team started the match strongly, putting pressure on Morocco's players, forcing them to commit several defensive errors that led to scoring opportunities. But a defensive lapse gave the 'Atlas Lions' the lead early in the second half, and from that moment, Canada's task became more difficult.
Eustáquio said: "I think we pressed them and were on top of them. I think we caused them a lot of trouble, and I believe the first dangerous chance was ours but we didn't score."
He added: "Then came their first chance, or maybe half a chance, from a set piece amid a big scramble in the box, and they managed to score. I think that was the difference."
He continued: "After that, naturally, the game opened up. We pushed forward, but they exploited spaces on the counterattack and scored two more goals. I think the scoreline doesn't reflect the reality of what happened in the match, but in the end, you have to admit they made the most of their chances."
Looking at what the Canadian team achieved during the preparation period for the tournament, and then the historic accomplishments on the field, Eustáquio believes that football in his country has never been in a better place than it is now.
He said: "We leave Canadian football in the best place. I think it was great for everyone back home, whether in Toronto or Vancouver, especially in the fan zones, to see this huge support."
