Crisis Continues: Mbappé Faces Legal Threat Ahead of Morocco Clash
Kylian Mbappé, captain of the French national team, faces the threat of legal action and extradition to Paraguay, hours before France's match against Morocco in the 2026 World Cup quarterfinals.
Guillermo Duarte Cacavelos, lawyer for Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla, announced his intention to sue Mbappé for defamation, threatening to request his extradition to Paraguay if he does not retract his statements against his client.
The dispute stems from a racist comment made by Senator Amarilla (61) against Mbappé following France's 1-0 victory over Argentina in the World Cup. The French captain responded via social media, which the senator's lawyer considered 'defamation and slander' warranting a court appearance in Paraguay.
Legal Positions of Both Sides
Cacavelos told local channel ABC Cardinal that his client has parliamentary immunity and that Paraguayan law does not penalize her statements. In contrast, he stressed that what he called 'Mbappé's defamation' is a criminal offense in France, opening the door for legal action against him. He said: 'He could be extradited to Paraguay to answer for his actions.'
Meanwhile, the French Football Federation filed a complaint with the public prosecutor's office, which has opened an investigation in France.
Despite the threats, legal sources ruled out the possibility of Mbappé's extradition, according to Le Parisien. Article 696-4 of the French Code of Criminal Procedure states that 'extradition of wanted persons shall not be granted if they are French citizens.' The law also requires the crime's penalty to exceed two years in prison for an extradition request to be considered.
Additionally, the Paraguayan government has officially distanced itself from Senator Amarilla's remarks and apologized to France, making a formal extradition request unlikely.
