The network indicated that Bounou stopped a streak of 15 successful penalty kicks by Mbappé for the French national team, whether in regular time or shootouts.
Mbappé had missed a penalty in the shootout against Switzerland in June 2021, causing a surprise elimination for the French team in the round of 16 of the European Championship.
After that match, Mbappé wrote on Instagram, "I apologize for this penalty. I wanted to help the team but I failed. It will be difficult for me to sleep after this."
