Mbappe equals Kane, continues march towards Cristiano Ronaldo's throne
Kylian Mbappe bolstered his historic record with the French national team in major tournaments, scoring the first goal for Les Bleus in the 60th minute of the match against Morocco, which ended in a 2-0 victory for France on Thursday evening in the 2026 World Cup quarterfinals.
Mbappe raised his tally to 21 goals in major tournaments (20 in the World Cup, 1 in the European Championship), equaling England's Harry Kane for second place on the list of top-scoring European players in major competitions, behind Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo who leads with 25 goals, and ahead of Germans Miroslav Klose (19) and Gerd Müller (18).

Mbappe also became the first player to contribute to 11 goals in a single World Cup edition since Gerd Müller for Germany in 1970, raising his tally in the 2026 edition to 8 goals and 3 assists, compared to Müller's 13 goal contributions in 1970 (10 goals and 3 assists).
Notably, the Real Madrid star left the pitch in the 77th minute of the Morocco match, appearing to suffer an injury, prompting coach Didier Deschamps to bring on striker Jean-Philippe Mateta as his replacement.
