The Uruguayan Football Association has appointed former player Diego Forlán as the technical director of the national team, succeeding Argentine Marcelo Bielsa, who resigned after Uruguay's elimination from the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada in the group stage.

The association stated in a statement that Forlán's contract will run until March 2027, after which the association will evaluate his performance before deciding whether to extend his contract or appoint a new coach for the next World Cup. It noted that Forlán will continue to coach the Uruguay under-20 team, which will participate in the 2027 South American Youth Championship.

It is worth noting that the new technical director Diego Forlán is 47 years old. He is a former Uruguay national team player who made 112 international appearances and scored 36 goals, making him Uruguay's third all-time leading scorer. He led his country to fourth place in the World Cup in South Africa, won the Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament, and was the top scorer with 5 goals. He also won the Copa América with his team in 2011 in Argentina.
