Winger Jeremy Doku celebrated the birth of his child during the World Cup, but he lost his place in the starting lineup of the Belgian national football team. However, facing Spain in the quarterfinals on Friday in Los Angeles could be an opportunity for redemption. The Manchester City winger, 24, was expected to be a key player in his country's campaign during the tournament, but he started only three of Belgium's five matches, and remained on the bench for the last match against the United States (4-1). Nevertheless, his speed, dribbling skills and ability to bypass defenders make him an option for French coach Rudi Garcia, who will devise a plan to surprise the European champions. Doku was not in Garcia's plans on Monday against America, and he relied on Dodi Lukebakio and Leandro Trossard on the flanks, who put in a lot of effort both when in possession and when losing the ball. Doku has similar qualities that Garcia may turn to in order to break through the Spanish defense, which has not conceded any goal in the tournament so far. Belgium's coach is known for changing his plans, and his choices were right against the United States, but he will need new plans against Spain. Doku started the tournament while ill, then hurriedly traveled to London to attend the birth of his son, missing the match against Iran. In the 5-1 win over New Zealand in the group stage, the coach substituted him before the hour mark due to fatigue, and more was expected of him in the round of 32, but Doku also left early in the second half before Belgium miraculously avoided defeat against Senegal. Doku did not hide his ambition to become the best winger in world football, but he admits he needs to score more goals. He said: "If I score those goals, I am confident that I can certainly achieve that.. I feel I am in a good position regarding assists, but I need to be more present in areas where easy goals can be scored, such as close-range shots and the like." Doku excelled before the World Cup, scoring five goals in the last two months of the season with Manchester City, but he has not scored for the Belgian national team since last November in the match against Liechtenstein.
