The Egyptian Football Association announced on Wednesday its approval of renewing the contract of Hossam Hassan, the national team coach, after a successful World Cup campaign; the Pharaohs achieved their first ever victory in the finals.

Hassan led Egypt to their first World Cup win in the group stage, before exiting in the round of 16 after a dramatic 2-3 loss near the end to defending champions Argentina.

In a statement, it said: 'Hani Abu Rida, President of the Egyptian Football Association, announced the Board of Directors' approval to renew the contract with Hossam Hassan, head coach of the senior national team, and Ibrahim Hassan, team manager, as part of the board's commitment to continue the national team's technical project and build on the historic achievements for Egyptian football in the recent period.'

It added: 'The president of the association clarified that the board will complete the procedures for approving and renewing the contract during its next meeting, immediately upon the national team delegation's arrival home.'

The Egyptian football body did not specify the contract duration, but local reports indicated that the new contract will extend until 2030.

Hassan had earlier stated that he had been working with the national team without a contract since February 2026.

Hassan (59 years old) took charge of Egypt in February 2024 and led the team to the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, in addition to qualifying for the 2026 World Cup for the first time in eight years.

After becoming the first Egyptian to participate in the World Cup as both player and coach, Egypt's all-time top scorer led his country to a victory over New Zealand in Group Seven, finishing second to advance to the knockout stage for the first time; they then beat Australia on penalties in the round of 32 to face Argentina, seeking a quarterfinal berth.

But Egypt squandered a 2-0 lead with 11 minutes remaining, conceding three goals and exiting the World Cup after their most notable appearance in the finals.

Hassan has won 20 matches, lost six, and drawn nine during his tenure with the national team.
