Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano "Dibu" Martínez cast doubt on his international future after wondering if "it's time to step aside", following the defeat in the 2026 World Cup final against Spain on Sunday, in a message he posted on Instagram on Tuesday.

The 33-year-old said: "I dreamed of winning it (the cup) again, and dreamed of bringing it back to Argentina, and making history again," adding: "The truth is it's hard to describe the pain. I must now think about many things, consider how to move forward, and wonder if it's time to step aside."

He concluded his message saying: "I'm really sorry, I gave my best to help my country and my teammates."

Martínez was Argentina's best player in the final after saving 11 shots, but he could do nothing about the winning goal scored by Ferran Torres in extra time.

The Aston Villa goalkeeper has played 67 matches for his country, and has been one of its pillars since his international debut in 2021, playing a decisive role in winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar against France on penalties.
