Enzo: Heir to the 'Elegant Prince' and the Decisive Man
“This is the most important goal of my career,” said Enzo Fernández, player of the Argentina national football team, after his historic header into the Egyptian net, the moment that encapsulated all the dreams of the ‘Tango’ star’s childhood and announced the birth of a new hope for the ‘Albiceleste’. Raúl Fernández, Enzo’s father, never expected, even in his most optimistic dreams, that his son would achieve everything that his idol Enzo Francescoli, the Uruguayan magician who captured the hearts of River Plate fans, could not. Fernández was one of those smitten by Francescoli’s love, to the point that he vowed to name one of his sons after him.
“This is the most important goal of my career,” said Enzo Fernández, Argentina national football team player, after his historic header into the Egyptian net, the moment that encapsulated all the dreams of the ‘Tango’ star’s childhood and announced the birth of a new hope for the ‘Albiceleste’. At the dawn of the new century, on January 17, 2001, Raúl Fernández had a baby boy, and he decided to fulfill the vow he had made to himself, naming him Enzo, to be a source of optimism for the family that he would become a footballer like Francescoli, leading his country and River Plate to glory. Years passed, and the infant grew up in a sports-loving family that was utterly devoted to River Plate, gathering every week at home to watch their matches, and sometimes having to travel more than 1,300 kilometers to Buenos Aires to support the ‘Millionaires’ from the stands of the Monumental stadium. In 2005, Raúl’s relationships with many administrators, scouts, and youth coaches helped them accept his son into the club’s children’s team, but a weight problem stood in the way of Enzo’s and his father’s dream. This forced the father to take his son to a friend who was a specialized sports trainer for weight loss through tough exercises and diet programs, which made the little boy lose a lot of weight and start his journey with River’s kids. Enzo progressed through all the age groups at River until Marcelo Gallardo, the first-team coach, decided to use the slender youngster with the senior team, throwing him into league matches and Copa Libertadores competitions, before he moved to Benfica and then to Chelsea, becoming captain of the London Blues. In September 2022, Enzo was called up to the Argentine national team, and his father’s joy was unparalleled before he saw the family dream realized: Enzo was included in the Tango squad for the Qatar World Cup, where his family traveled to Qatar to watch the little boy playing alongside Lionel Messi, whom he had only watched when playing PlayStation with his peers. His father said of that moment: 'We are a humble family from a poor neighborhood; we fought with Enzo since he was six years old when he joined the club. His mother took him to training every day by bus because we didn’t have a car. We suffered from that, but now we are reaping our reward, which is that Enzo is in the right place he dreamed of all his life.' Enzo, the young lad, led Argentina alongside Lionel Messi during the 2022 World Cup, and they managed to end their country’s 36-year wait for the world title, as the Tango won the title, and Enzo won the Best Young Player award. Enzo’s parents’ eyes welled up as they watched their little boy from the Lusail Stadium stands, leading his country to achieve the dream of millions and surpassing legends of the game who had never won the world title, chief among them the 'Elegant Prince' Enzo Francescoli. In the American World Cup, Enzo succeeded in repeating his brilliance, leading his country to the quarter-finals with a header that gave the 'Albiceleste' victory over Egypt in the round of 16, and they now face the Swiss.
