Argentine Enzo Fernandez became the sixth player to receive a red card in a FIFA World Cup final. Fernandez received two yellow cards during the second half of the 2026 World Cup final against Spain on Sunday evening. As a result, he was forced to leave MetLife Stadium in New York City before the end of regular time. Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić showed the first yellow card in the 82nd minute and the second in the 90+3 minute, forcing the defending champions to go into extra time with a reduced squad against Spanish possession that preceded the sending off. Fernandez joined five players who had been sent off in World Cup finals, including his compatriots Pedro Monzón and Gustavo Dezotti, who both received red cards when Argentina lost 1-0 to Germany in the 1990 final. Frenchman Marcel Desailly was sent off in the 1998 final, yet his team won 3-0 against Brazil. French star Zinedine Zidane received a red card in the 2006 final against Italy, who won the title on penalties. Zizou's sending off remains iconic in World Cup memory, after the great star headbutted defender Marco Materazzi in the chest before the final whistle and left the pitch without protest. Dutch defender John Heitinga was sent off in the 2010 final against Spain, which the Dutch lost 1-0 in extra time. While Monzón and Zidane received straight red cards, Dezotti, Desailly, Heitinga, and finally Fernandez left after two yellow cards.
