Fire breaks out in 2004 Olympic venue
A hall designated for badminton competitions in the 2004 Athens Olympics, which cost millions to build, suffered severe damage from a fire that broke out Sunday night, causing its roof to collapse. The Greek fire department announced it dispatched about 40 firefighters and 13 vehicles to control the fire inside the hall, which had been abandoned for several years. The fire department stated that the fire was not brought under control until the early hours of Monday morning, with no injuries reported. The badminton hall is located in a park that is very popular among locals. The hall, which was originally built as a temporary facility, cost more than $23 million. After the 2004 Athens Games, it was leased as a private concert venue after an additional 16 million euros were spent on it, and it hosted several shows such as 'Cats' and 'Mamma Mia', but Greece's highest administrative court ruled in 2012 that the facility violated building regulations and must be demolished. The municipality of Athens said the 20-year lease ended last April.
