French first: Les Bleus reach third consecutive semi-final
The French national football team reached the World Cup semi-finals for the third consecutive time, a first for them, after defeating Morocco 2-0 on Thursday evening at Boston Stadium in Massachusetts, USA, in the quarter-finals of the current edition. The first half ended goalless, with French star Kylian Mbappé missing a penalty in the 28th minute, saved by Yassine Bounou, goalkeeper of Saudi club Al-Hilal. The same player opened the scoring in the 60th minute with a shot from the edge of the area, and star Ousmane Dembélé added the second goal for Les Bleus. With the two goals, coach Didier Deschamps' squad advanced to the last four, repeating what they did in 2018 and 2022. For the first time, the French have reached this stage in three consecutive editions of the tournament, thus surpassing the generation of the 1980s that led the team to semi-finals in two consecutive editions, 1982 and 1986. Les Bleus have reached the World Cup semi-finals for the eighth time overall, and aim to win the title for the third time, after their triumphs in 1998 and 2018. France finished as runners-up in 2006 and 2022, third in 1958 and 1986, and fourth in 1982.
