(CNN)-- French President Emmanuel Macron made a point of bidding farewell to the head coach of 'Les Bleus', Didier Deschamps, after he played his last match with the team.
France had suffered a defeat at the hands of England with a score of 4-6 in Deschamps' final match, at the 'Hard Rock' Stadium, on Sunday night, in the 2026 World Cup third-place playoff.
Macron posted on his 'X' account the highlights of Didier Deschamps with his country's team as a player and coach, and commented: 'Tonight closes a chapter in the history of French football. Thank you, Deschamps, for the legendary victories and intense emotions, for leading Les Bleus for years and inspiring the spirit of France. Fourteen years, the Deschamps era.'
French player Kylian Mbappé, who scored a brace against the 'Three Lions', wrote: 'You gave us so much. We should have given you a farewell worthy of you, but we fell short. Words are hard to express what you have given over the past fourteen years, given the pivotal role you played in bringing this team back to the forefront.'
He continued: 'Not everyone always realized the greatness of what you did, but time and history will do you justice. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to represent my country on the biggest stages for many years.'
He added: 'I feel proud and privileged to have stood alongside one of the greatest legends of our country, and I cherish those wonderful memories of everything we lived and achieved together. I wish you the best in your new chapter, and thank you again for everything you have given to this shirt that means so much to us.'
Deschamps (57) took over as coach of 'Les Bleus' in 2012, and with them won the 2018 World Cup and the 2020/2021 UEFA Nations League.
