From Another Galaxy: Rosario Restores Messi Mural
The city of Rosario, Messi's birthplace, restored a massive 534-square-meter mural of him on a building side, opened just in time before Argentina's World Cup quarterfinal match against Switzerland. Messi led Argentina to Copa America titles in 2012 and 2024, and the 2022 World Cup. He currently tops the 2026 World Cup scoring chart with 8 goals, tied with France's Kylian Mbappe, and became the tournament's all-time top scorer with 21 goals across six editions.
The center of Rosario, Lionel Messi's birthplace, saw the restoration of a huge mural of him covering 534 square meters on the side of a building, opened just in time before the Argentine national team's match against Switzerland in the World Cup quarterfinals. Messi led Argentina to two Copa America titles in 2012 and 2024, and the 2022 World Cup. He currently tops the 2026 World Cup scoring table with 8 goals, tied with Frenchman Kylian Mbappe, and became the all-time top scorer of the tournament with 21 goals scored in six editions since 2006. Marlen Zuriaga, the project official, said that restoring the mural, originally painted in 2021, required 300 liters of paint. The mural, titled "From Another Galaxy and from My City," now features three stars on the badge of Messi's giant shirt representing Argentina's three World Cup titles, and the word "Thank you" in Spanish at the top. Messi (39 years old), who became the all-time World Cup top scorer with 21 goals during this edition, started his football career at Newell's Old Boys in Rosario, which is Argentina's third-largest city, located in Santa Fe province on the banks of the Paraná River. Lisandro Ortega, one of the artists involved in the mural, said: "We named the mural 'From Another Galaxy,' but in reality he is a human like us, who faced many challenges since his childhood, born into a humble working-class family, but he overcame all that."
