History warns.. Spain and Argentina fear the curse of the first goal
The Spanish national team has achieved an exceptional feat during its journey in the 2026 World Cup so far, as it has never fallen behind in the score, not even for a minute, in any of its seven matches in the tournament.
This statistic puts 'La Roja' in a rare historical position, as only two teams have ever won the World Cup without trailing in any match throughout the tournament: Italy in 1938 and 1982, and Germany in 1990, according to Opta statistics.

The network added that the team that scored the first goal in the World Cup final has lifted the trophy in 6 of the last 7 occasions, with the only exception in this period being the 2006 final, when France drew 1-1 with Italy before losing on penalties.
The Argentine national team qualified for the 2026 World Cup final after topping its group, then overcoming Cape Verde (3-2) in the round of 32, beating Egypt by the same score in the round of 16, before defeating Switzerland (3-1) in the quarter-finals and England (2-1) in the semi-finals.
Spain also topped its group, then eliminated Austria (3-0) in the round of 32, knocked out Portugal (1-0) in the round of 16, before overcoming Belgium (2-1) in the quarter-finals and France (2-0) in the semi-finals.
Lionel Scaloni's team is seeking its fourth World Cup title in history, after winning in 1978, 1986, and 2022, while Spain aims for its second world title, having lifted the trophy for the first and last time in the 2010 edition.
