Manchester City have signed midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest in a record deal worth £116 million, the largest in the club's history. The fee for the 23-year-old England international, who signed a contract until 2031, surpassed the £100 million the club paid for Jack Grealish from Aston Villa in 2021. It also became the second largest transfer for an English player after his national teammate Morgan Rogers, who moved from Aston Villa to Chelsea this week for £117 million. The record for the largest deal by an English club remains held by Liverpool, at £125 million for Swedish striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle. The player said in a club statement on Thursday: 'Manchester City is one of the biggest clubs in the world, and the squad they have is amazing and very strong in all positions. From the moment I learned of their interest in signing me, I was determined to complete this move.' Meanwhile, City's sporting director Hugo Viana said: 'Anderson's development over the past years has been truly impressive, and he shows a desire to become a better player.' City's statement noted that Anderson was the player with the most touches and the most duels won in the Premier League last season. Anderson, a Newcastle academy graduate, moved to Nottingham Forest in 2024 and became a key player, playing 75 matches over two league seasons, and contributed to their first qualification for a European competition in 2024–2025. He was first called up to the national team by German coach Thomas Tuchel in September 2025 against Andorra, and has since played 17 matches. Anderson started in all World Cup matches except the third-place playoff, which England won 6–4 against France, coming on as a substitute in the final minutes.
