In his final match: Deschamps: I don't want anyone to cry
Didier Deschamps, coach of the French national football team, admitted that they will play the third-place match in the World Cup on Saturday against England with the motivation to win, despite their disappointment from losing the semi-final. France, the 2018 world champion and runner-up of the previous edition, was one of the top contenders for the title, hoping to reach the final for the third consecutive time, but lost 0-2 to Spain in the semi-finals, which will face Argentina, which in turn beat England 2-1. That was the third consecutive loss for the team in the semi-finals of a major tournament against Spain, after Euro 2024 and the Nations League. Saturday's match will be the last for coach Deschamps with France after 14 years, during which he won the 2018 World Cup. Deschamps said in a press conference on Friday in Miami: "I have a duty in this match. It is not a friendly; it is a third-place match. It is up to the players, the coaching staff, and I have a duty to achieve this last goal. It is true that it is less important than the final, and England does not want to play this match, and neither do we. But here we are." He added: "We must focus on the goal of finishing third and achieving this goal. That is our duty when we wear this shirt. I know deep down that this is my last match. I don't want anyone to cry. The end is near, but life goes on." Deschamps and his players have not yet gotten over the loss to Spain, and the coach said he will make changes to his lineup due to some players not being ready and others being injured. He did not confirm that Kylian Mbappé, the team's top scorer and captain, would start, but he said he is ready. Mbappé shares the top of the tournament's scoring chart with Argentine Lionel Messi with eight goals each, but the latter has four assists more. Defender Ibrahima Konaté said they hope to win in the last match under Deschamps' leadership despite the bitterness left by the semi-final loss. He added: "None of us wanted to play the third-place match, but we have no other choice. We want to repay our coach. He has given so much to the team. We must be grateful to him for that, and we must do our best to win and get the chocolate medal, this bronze medal."
