Ipswich Town, returning to the English Premier League, announced on Wednesday the signing of Brazilian striker Emerson Correa da Silva from French club Toulouse on a five-year contract. British media reports stated that the 21-year-old Emerson became the first player to join the team under new manager Gary O'Neil, in a club-record deal worth $35.54 million. Emerson said in a statement released by the club: 'I am very proud to sign for Ipswich Town, I have always dreamed of playing in the English Premier League, and I am confident that I have chosen the ideal club to achieve this dream.' He added: 'I will give my best for the team in every match, and I am excited to start and get to know my new teammates and the fans.' Emerson scored seven goals in 31 matches during his only season with Toulouse after joining the French club last September. Before moving to France, the striker played 13 matches for Brazilian side Athletico Paranaense, and also spent a period with Turkish club Goztepe. Ipswich will face Sunderland on August 22 in their return to the Premier League for the first time since 2001 after finishing second in the Championship last season.
