Iraola: Expect New Signings for the Reds
Spanish Andoni Iraola, head coach of English Premier League side Liverpool, stated on Monday that the Reds are close to finalizing several new deals to improve the team's level next season. In his first press conference as the English team's coach, Iraola said: 'We have already signed two players, but we need more players, we realize that. The club is working on that. Spanish Andoni Iraola, head coach of Liverpool's first football team, explained on Monday the imminent signing of several new deals by the Reds in order to improve the team's level next season. Iraola said in his first press conference as the English team's coach: 'We have already signed two players, but we need more players, we realize that. The club is working on that. As a coach, and selfishly, we want players to join us from day one and start training in preparation for the new season, but we know that football does not work this way; the team is working seriously to complete these signings.' The 44-year-old Iraola pointed out that he has to adapt some aspects of his style to his new position, the most prominent role in his career, after speaking with Liverpool players and his coaching staff about the methods that have been successful with them before and what can be improved, adding: 'I think it is different. I have the advantage that the players might already know what we will ask of them regarding the style of play, but we will have enough time to get to know each other. It is easy to get to know the player and ask him about the positions he feels comfortable in and where he sees himself, because I ask them these questions. But after I see them, I will conduct some experiments during the pre-season period, and I will feel things and then make decisions based on that.' Iraola affirmed his awareness of the magnitude of his new position's tasks, adding: 'I understand, I won't know it completely until I go through certain experiences. I am here to face these situations and I am ready for them. I realize that this is a huge experience; everything I say will be under the microscope, and you have to be aware of mistakes. I do not want to be overly cautious; I will not live in a bubble.' Liverpool, who finished last season in fifth place, have so far signed Jeremy Jacquet, the central defender, from Stade Rennais, and winger Victor Munoz from Osasuna, in preparation for the 2026-2027 season. The Spanish coach, who took over last June after the dismissal of the Dutchman Arne Slot, faces the challenge of reviving the Reds' fortunes while also having to deal with the absence of Egyptian Mohamed Salah, the team's main source of goals for most of the past decade. Iraola acknowledged that he must find solutions to deal with the long-term injuries of Ugo Ekitiké, Conor Bradley, and Giovanni Leoni. The Spanish coach, who played for Athletic Bilbao between 2003 and 2015, took charge of Bournemouth in 2023 and led them last season to sixth place in the English Premier League and qualification for the Europa League. Liverpool start the new season away to Newcastle on August 23.
