Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni returned to his hometown after his country's loss to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final, finding himself surrounded by a number of journalists seeking answers about his future with the national team, as well as the fate of captain Lionel Messi.

Scaloni had raised questions about his tenure after becoming visibly emotional and crying during the press conference following the final match in New Jersey, which was decided by a late goal from Ferran Torres.

Although the coach, who led Argentina to the 2022 World Cup title, stopped to speak with journalists who blocked his car, he did not give definitive answers about his future, merely responding to questions with a smile, which was unusual.

Regarding whether Lionel Messi intends to retire from international football, Scaloni said: 'I don't know anything about Messi's agenda.'

He also addressed rumors about the possible retirement of goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, after he hinted at it in an online post, responding: 'After a tournament, it's normal for such things to come up. I don't browse the internet.'

Regarding his future with Argentina, Scaloni affirmed: 'We are continuing until December (the end of the contract). The important thing is for the public to know that we gave our absolute best. Argentina is what matters, whether with me or another coach. The key is the unity and harmony of the group.'

He added: 'In my wildest dreams, I never imagined reaching this position and achieving everything we have. Anyone would desire this place.'

The Argentine coach expressed his great happiness with the public reception the team received upon returning to the country, despite losing the title, saying: 'We saw the fans happy; even children celebrated as if we were champions. It's amazing, a surprising welcome. We proved that we are noble in defeat as well, and we can take many positives from it.'
