The management of the 29-year-old player said he hit a cyclist at 8:45 a.m. on Wednesday. The cyclist was taken for a medical checkup and was found to have bruises, while Mitoma was unharmed. Mitoma's management explained that the accident occurred due to "the player's lack of attention to the road ahead," adding in a statement, "Immediately after the accident, he checked on the condition of the other party and complied with the instructions of the police officers who arrived at the scene." Mitoma's management said it "would like to offer its deepest and sincerest apologies to the person who was injured in the accident, as well as to all those affected." It added, "Mr. Mitoma takes this accident very seriously and feels sympathy and regret toward the injured person." Local police declined to comment when contacted by AFP. Kyodo News and other media reported that Mitoma is suspected of running a red light. Mitoma was ruled out of Japan's World Cup squad after suffering a hamstring injury during Brighton's 3-0 win over Wolverhampton on May 9. Mitoma is considered one of Japan's top players, having scored the winning goal in a 1-0 friendly victory over England at Wembley in March. Japan lost 2-1 to Brazil in the round of 32 of the World Cup, which has now reached the quarterfinals.
