World Cup: European Clash as England Aim to Return to the Semifinals and Norway Seek to Make History
Norway are one victory away from reaching the semifinals for the first time in their history, while England aim to return to the final four, as the two teams meet in a highly anticipated European clash in the quarterfinals in Miami.
42 minutes ago - England seek a fourth semifinal appearance at the World Cup and Norway aim to continue their historic journey.
Norway have produced one of the standout stories of the World Cup, reaching the quarterfinals for the first time in their history. Stale Solbakken's side finished second in Group Nine behind France before securing two historic wins in their first two knockout matches in the World Cup.
Erling Haaland was Norway's hero in both matches, scoring a late winner against Ivory Coast in the round of 32 and then netting a brace against five-time world champions Brazil in the round of 16 to lead the Scandinavian side to their furthest point in the tournament.
Haaland has now scored seven goals in four matches, just one behind tournament top scorers Mbappé and Messi.
In contrast, England topped Group Twelve ahead of Croatia, Ghana, and Panama, but needed a huge effort to secure their place in the quarterfinals.
The Three Lions came from a goal down to beat the Democratic Republic of Congo 2-1 in the round of 32 thanks to two late goals from Harry Kane, before showing a different side of resilience against co-hosts Mexico. Jude Bellingham scored twice, and Thomas Tuchel's side won 3-2 at the Mexico City Stadium despite playing most of the second half with ten men.
While Norway play their first ever quarterfinal match, England reach this stage for the 11th time in their history.
The Three Lions have only reached the semifinals on three occasions: when they won the title at home in 1966, and again in 1990 and 2018, before being eliminated by West Germany and Croatia respectively.
After being eliminated at this stage by France four years ago, England will be desperate to make amends for that disappointment.
The match will also feature many battles between club teammates. Haaland will face his Manchester City colleagues Nico O'Reilly and Marc Guéhi, as well as former teammate John Stones, while Norway captain Martin Ødegaard will come up against his Arsenal teammates Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka. Overall, nine players from Norway's 26-man squad play in the English Premier League.
The winner of this match will face the winner of Argentina vs. Switzerland in the semifinals on July 15 in Atlanta.
