Jürgen Klinsmann, who led Germany to win the 1990 World Cup in Italy against Argentina, affirmed that participating in a World Cup final is an unparalleled experience.

Klinsmann said in an interview with FIFA's official website on Sunday, hours before the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina: 'There is a unique specialness to that match because everyone involved in a World Cup final knows it may only happen once in a lifetime. The magnitude of the event is enormous, and it's what everyone dreams of; every player, coach, member of the technical staff, and fan dreams of their country being in a World Cup final at some point in their lives.'

Klinsmann added that the challenge of participating in a World Cup final is more psychological than physical, saying: 'You are prepared for it, you have played the entire tournament, and you are on a good run and in a positive moment because the two teams that end up in the World Cup final are there for a reason.'

He explained: 'It's about finishing the job for your team, so it's about controlling your nerves, maintaining your balance and calm, and enjoying it to some extent, but all of that is easier said than done.'

Klinsmann, who participated in three World Cups as a player and coach, believes it is essential to focus on the style of play rather than the historical prestige of the match, stressing: 'If possible, stick to the game plan and the job you have to do for your team... and stay realistic and balanced. There is a lot that goes into it, and quality usually shows in the end.'

On the feeling of winning the World Cup, Klinsmann said: 'It's something you don't realize when you achieve it... then it's time to celebrate and you celebrate for days and nights. It's something you absorb after the end of your career, and it becomes clearer when you stop playing because you take on other roles and things, and people will always remember you from that final with those who watched you.'

He concluded his remarks by saying: 'Football fans from other countries around the world will remember you from their places and what they were doing at that specific moment in time. It's something that will stay with you forever, and that's the amazing thing about winning the World Cup; it changes your life, no matter what.'
