Klopp Nears Germany Dream: 'Last Hurdle' Before Agreement
The German Football Association (DFB) announced it has reached an agreement on key points of a potential contract with Jürgen Klopp to become the national team's head coach, with both sides confident of reaching a deal with Red Bull.
The German Football Association (DFB) announced it has reached an agreement on the key points of a potential contract with Jürgen Klopp to take over as head coach of the German national team, and that both sides are confident of reaching an agreement with Red Bull.
Talks between former Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp and DFB President Bernd Neuendorf were held in New York on Friday.
Also present at the meeting was Hans-Joachim Watzke, vice president of the DFB, who has a strong relationship with Klopp from their time together at Borussia Dortmund.
Klopp is in the United States working as a television analyst during the World Cup, but has already expressed interest in replacing Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned after the team's round of 32 exit to Paraguay.
A statement from the DFB about the meeting said: "During this constructive meeting, an agreement was reached on the key points of a potential contract."
It added: "Negotiations will continue next week. Both parties are confident that a final agreement can be reached, provided a settlement is reached with Klopp's current employer, Red Bull."
The DFB statement clarified that the contract's adoption requires the approval of the full Supervisory Board and the relevant bodies within the association.
According to media reports, Klopp is expected to sign a contract lasting until the 2030 World Cup, with a salary only slightly higher than what Julian Nagelsmann was earning.
German newspaper Bild reported that the former Liverpool coach met with DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and his deputy Hans-Joachim Watzke at a hotel near John F. Kennedy Airport in New York.
Photos showed Klopp and his agent Marc Kosicke at the building's entrance, along with Neuendorf and Watzke with their luggage. The meeting is said to have lasted more than four hours.
It is noted that Klopp is under contract with Red Bull, where he works as Head of Global Soccer until 2029, but reports say there is a clause in the contract allowing Klopp to leave if the German national team calls.
If the reports are correct, Klopp will leave his role at the energy drink company but will remain a brand ambassador. Red Bull owns clubs around the world, including Leipzig and New York Red Bulls.
