Marta and Elise into Wimbledon Quarterfinals
Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk and Belgian Elise Mertens reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, the third of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, for the first time in their careers on Monday. Kostyuk, ranked 13th in the world, defeated American Ashlyn Krueger 6-4, 6-4, while Mertens later won by the same score against Czech Marie Bouzkova. The 24-year-old Ukrainian, after reaching the semifinals of a Grand Slam for the first time at Roland Garros in early June, aims to repeat that achievement for the second consecutive time when she faces Italian Jasmine Paolini, the 2024 Wimbledon runner-up, who ended the run of Filipino Alexandra Eala by winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the fourth round. As for Mertens, the 30-year-old, after losing three times in the fourth round at Wimbledon, reached the women's singles quarterfinals for the first time at the All England Club, where she previously won two doubles titles in 2021 and 2025. The Belgian will next face the winner of the match between American Madison Keys and Czech Linda Noskova, who recently won the Berlin grass-court tournament. Mertens' best Grand Slam result is reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open in 2018. In the men's draw, Italian Flavio Cobolli, ranked 10th in the world and runner-up at the French Open, advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Australian fifth seed Alex de Minaur 7-5, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in two hours and 34 minutes. Cobolli will face either Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov or British Arthur Fery in the quarterfinals.
