Martinez's future with Argentina uncertain.

Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano 'Dibu' Martinez cast doubt on his international future after questioning whether 'the time has come to step aside' following the defeat in the 2026 World Cup final against Spain, in a message posted on Instagram. The 33-year-old said, 'I dreamed of winning it (the cup) again, I dreamed of bringing it back to Argentina and making history again,' adding, 'The truth is it's hard to describe the pain. Now I need to think about many things, consider how to move forward, and question whether it's time to step aside.'

He concluded his message saying, 'I am truly sorry, I gave my best to help my country and my teammates.' Martinez was Argentina's best player in the final after making 11 saves, but he could do nothing to stop the winning goal scored by Ferran Torres in extra time. The Aston Villa goalkeeper has played 67 matches for his country and has been a key figure since his international debut in 2021, playing a decisive role in winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar against France on penalties.
