It appears that Gianni Infantino is on track to decide the presidency race of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) early, as he enjoys overwhelming support ahead of the elections scheduled for 2027, in which he seeks to win a fourth term.

The British newspaper The Guardian reported that Infantino, who has been president of FIFA since 2016, already enjoys formal support from more than 200 national federations, out of 211 member federations of the international federation, while a handful of federations are still hesitant to announce their support.

Several European federations are among those that have not yet taken a position, including the German Football Association, which has not given its official support to Infantino.

Some federations also feel that they are under continuous pressure from FIFA to declare their allegiance, which, according to the newspaper, contradicts FIFA's code of ethics.

Despite this limited number of hesitant federations, Infantino's re-election during the FIFA Congress scheduled for March 2027 seems almost certain, especially in the absence of any real competition so far, according to the French newspaper L'Équipe.

The door for candidacy remains open until next November 18, but no candidate has yet declared a serious intention to run.

Moreover, the criticism Infantino has faced due to his close relationship with US President Donald Trump, which escalated following the controversy over the lifting of Folarin Balogun's suspension during the World Cup, does not seem to have affected the level of support the Swiss official enjoys within the corridors of the international federation.
