Nagelsmann resigns as Germany coach... Klopp the leading candidate to succeed him
The German Football Association announced on Friday the resignation of Julian Nagelsmann, head coach of the senior national team, following elimination in the Round of 32 at the World Cup, while also indicating that it is seeking to start talks with German coach Jürgen Klopp, former Liverpool manager.
A statement from the German association said: 'The stakeholders and supervisory board of the German Football Association decided unanimously on Friday, upon the proposal of President Bernd Neuendorf, to terminate the contractual relationship with national team coach Julian Nagelsmann with immediate effect.'
The statement added: 'Nagelsmann had requested, during a confidential meeting with the association's leadership the previous day, to be relieved of his duties, and the stakeholders and supervisory board have now approved this request.'
Nagelsmann's tenure ended after Germany lost to Paraguay 3-4 on penalties in their first knockout match last Monday, with most criticism directed at the coach.
The German national team, four-time World Cup winners, also lost their final group stage match to Ecuador, after starting the tournament with two wins over Curaçao and Ivory Coast.
Nagelsmann (38 years old), who previously coached Hoffenheim, Leipzig, and Bayern Munich, took charge of the German national team in September 2023, succeeding Hansi Flick.
Under his leadership, the German team played 37 matches, winning 23, with 7 draws and 7 losses. He also led the team to the quarterfinals of Euro 2024, which Germany hosted, and to the finals of the UEFA Nations League last year.
Former Borussia Dortmund coach Jürgen Klopp (59 years old) has become the leading official candidate to take over the national team. Klopp currently serves as Head of Global Soccer Operations for Red Bull.
The German national team will play its next match in the UEFA Nations League on September 24 against the Netherlands, while the group also includes Greece and Serbia, with the competition running until November.
