Matthäus: Give Klopp Freedom to Succeed with Germany
Lothar Matthäus, the German national football team legend, hopes Jürgen Klopp will be given wide creative freedom if he is appointed as the new coach of 'Die Mannschaft' after the failure at the FIFA World Cup.
The 1990 World Cup winner wrote in an article for the weekly magazine 'Sport Bild' today (Wednesday): 'I hope the German Football Association (DFB) gives him all the time and powers necessary to bring about real improvements. This includes allowing him to choose the right people for every position. People who work according to his vision.'
Matthäus specifically mentioned the 2014 World Cup winners Per Mertesacker and Bastian Schweinsteiger, whom he envisions as part of Klopp's coaching staff due to their necessary experience.
Klopp is considered the top candidate to take over the German national team after Julian Nagelsmann resigned following the World Cup exit in the Round of 32, losing 3–4 on penalties to Paraguay.
Rudi Völler, the sporting director of the German Football Association, expressed his desire for more 2014 World Cup winners to take on leadership roles within the association.
He said at a press conference with German media: 'There are some names that may be brought up for discussion.'
He added: 'There are those who want that, and it will happen. This generation also has a duty, perhaps to step up and take some responsibility'; specifically referring to Mertesacker, Mats Hummels, Thomas Müller, Schweinsteiger, and Sami Khedira.
Völler, who intends to complete his contract running until 2028, confirmed: 'I hope I haven't forgotten anyone. These are names I can all imagine eventually holding some position in the German Football Association, either with me or with my successor.'
Mertesacker, who served as head of Arsenal's youth academy for several years, had previously offered his services to the German Football Association.
