Norway was in mourning on Wednesday over the death of Olaf Tufte, two-time Olympic rowing champion, who died on Tuesday at the age of 50. Tufte is considered the most successful rower in Norway's history, having won the Olympic gold medal in the men's single sculls in 2004 and 2008, as well as a silver medal in the double sculls in 2000 and a bronze medal in the same event in 2016.

Media reports said that Tufte, who also worked as a farmer, was found unconscious in his yard before dying in a hospital in the capital Oslo. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said in a statement: 'Tufte gave our nation great joy through sports. He was one of the greatest sports heroes in Norway's history, a decorated Olympic champion, and one of the best rowers our country has produced. He was also a wonderful role model for many. I extend my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.'
